Meet Elise Roodenburg, one of the vibrant creatives here at Makmende, who recently embarked on an unforgettable journey to Kigali for the Women Deliver 2023 conference. In this post, she’ll tell you about her experiences in the bustling city and the empowering event that left an impact on her.
What is your first impression of Kigali?

Elise: Kigali blew me away! The city is so green, safe, and clean, and most of all, the people touched me. The energy, the positivity, the ambition, the work ethos…! Kigali is vibrant, like something is cooking there. This is the city to keep an eye on because the mix of talent, work ethos, and the city’s structure are very promising for the future.

How was your experience working towards the solutions video and the vox-pops for BRAC? Any interesting insights?

Elise: I loved the cooperation with our international colleagues for the week. Besides the interesting takeaways during Women Deliver, it was amazing to bond with this group of ambitious and talented people from Bangladesh and Rwanda, and to incorporate the perspective of Rwandan artists/crews into the solutions presented at Women Deliver.

How was your experience working with our crew?

Elise: Our Rwandan crew impressed me with their positive mindset and work ethos of always wanting to continue during the long days we have been shooting. It really felt like equal cooperation, where we all dropped our ideas and chose the best ones together.

Were there any surprising or unexpected moments during the event that you found interesting?

Elise: Maybe not surprising or unexpected, but it was very inspiring to be surrounded by almost 6,000 women from all corners of the world, all having an energy of empowerment and feminism, all wanting to fight in their own niche for gender equality.
